The Idle Bee

Vegetable Planting

One of the things we promised ourselves, when we started this adventure, was that we would take time to produce our own food (at least to some extent). Over the last couple of weeks we have started this process by planting shallot sets and a range of seeds. Both onions and shallots can be easily grown from sets, which are small bulbs that have been grown from seed the previous season and have had their growth arrested by being lifted and dried. Their growth is restarted by planting them, effectively getting a head start for the following year. I hope that they work for us this year. Time will tell.
We have tried to pick a range of vegetables to grow this year, The Covid 19 pandemic has rather limited our ability to browse the seed racks at the local nursery but our old favourites of Pumpkin and Squash, Leeks, Carrots and Beetroot as well as Kale will make a good start. More to follow as we plant them.
